Four City Quadrants

When Maryland and Virginia first ceded the land that would become the nation’s capital, the city was divided into four quadrants. These four quadrants are the Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast. Each quadrant is centered in the Capital. However, quadrants vary in size. By far the largest quadrant is the Northwest. Containing over forty percent of the city’s land, this is a good place to start the search for Washington DC apartments. This is where you’ll find the capital’s central business district, making it an ideal place for commuters. It’s also where you’ll find Rock Creek Park, the perfect place for a stroll any time of the year. The Northeast is home to many universities and colleges as well as two large gardens open to the public. The Southeast is home to Capitol Hill and the center of the American government. The Southwestern part of the city contains many Smithsonian museums and federal office buildings.

Finding The Right Place

Location is a central consideration when looking for an apartment in the area. Several factors make it easy to live in Washington. The city’s extensive and inexpensive buses and subways make getting around easy and quick. Washington is also a fairly compact city with many attractions being located a short distance away. This makes it easy to keep car use to a minimum and keep transport expenses down. Many museums such as the Smithsonian complex are even free so residents always have something fun to do on their time off. Look for an area that has what is most important to you. For example, many residents are drawn to the Northwest quadrant because it has so many beautifully kept areas and lots of upscale, newly constructed and renovated apartments with magnificent views and private spaces.
